Hiroko Demichelis

Hiroko Demichelis

My life-long passion has been helping and supporting human beings to heal, flourish and increase their brain power efficiency. This led me to pursue two Masters degrees in both clinical and positive psychology from the University of East London. Since then, I’ve become an advocate for new therapies and technologies that can be used to improve focus and speed up healing. I believe that brain optimization is key to removing the blocks that keep us from being our most optimal selves, and that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive! I feel honored and grateful to be a part of my clients’ healing journey towards reaching their potential.

About

Hiroko started her career in psychology assisting her father, Bruno Demichelis, a world renowned sport psychologist, at the neuro-lab of a premier League soccer team (Chelsea Fc). Using cutting edge technology (neurofeedback and biofeedback) she witnessed the possibility to help top athletes measuring, training and improving their focus, attention stamina and self-regulation. Working with top athletes, she noticed that even among high performers, there were individuals with internal blocks and/or self-sabotaging types of behavior. She realized that she was also blocked in her own story. She learnt that when human beings experience trauma, these traumatic events can stay “stuck” in the nervous system and tend to re-appear every time a trigger awakens them.

Since then psychological healing became her primary focus, and today she is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) in the province of British Columbia, Canada, and a certified expert in the use of neurofeedback and biofeedback through the BCIA. Her credentials also include training in REBT (cognitive behavioral training) EMDR (trauma healing technique) and Mindfulness based therapy. She has worked extensively with trauma clients, and she is now using an integrative approach where she combines EMDR, Gestalt, sound and light entrainment, biofeedback, heart rate variability and neurofeedback. Her goal is to provide a broad tool box to support quick yet profound recovery.

Treatment Modalities

I utilize a combination of Neurofeedback (EEG recordings and training) and mindfulness-based biofeedback (recording of physiological measures such as breathing, heart rate, heart rate variability, muscle activity, skin conductivity, temperature). Additionally, I use Gestalt integration, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming) Light and sound entrainment.

Experience

I have been working full time in a highly specialized clinic dealing with complex cases, such as sexual abuse, military and ritual abuse, childhood trauma etc. My rationale is neuro-psychophysiological and I use a technology-based approach (neuro-biofeedback, lights and sound entrainment). In addition, I recently became a certified practitioner with the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP), a program supported by the Canadian Ministry of Justice.

My Interest in Working with Survivors

I am, as many of my colleagues operating in the field of trauma, a trauma survivor. I had been struggling with PTSD symptoms for very a prolonged period of time. I have come to discover techniques and practices that can help quickly and substantially. I believe anybody deserves full flourishing and psychological well-being, beyond trauma.

My Approach to Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care means having a clear understanding of how trauma affects the individual’s nervous system and attending to the very specific emotional, physical, psychological, neurological, relational and spiritual needs one has as a survivor of trauma.

How My Practice Holistically Addresses the Impacts of Sexual Trauma

I combine a vast array of tools aiming to promote the creation of new neuro-pathways associated with the perception of safety other than of fear as in case of trauma and particularly of sexual assault.

Modifications for Survivors

My approach is always adapted to the single individual and their needs. The objective data recorded (neurofeedback and biofeedback) offer additional information to my clinical judgement, allowing me to modify my interventions accordingly.

Payment Options

I accept cash, cheques, credit cars, etransfers and online payments on my website. I also accept clients supported by the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP), a program funded by the Canadian Ministry of Justice.
